A vacation agency is typically the major source of suggestions and information concerning vacations. These services investigate the destinations they suggest to their customers in regards to their safety as well as appropriateness for family vacations. Several of these services recommend destinations safe for older individuals and kids if the travelling group is a household searching for fun and sightseeing. They’ll remind the travellers of certain safety measures just to ensure that they know the various difficulties one might encounter. One such precaution an exotic vacation agency might state is to take certain vaccinations prior to visiting destinations outside of the US. Some countries, particularly countries located in the tropics, have diseases that can easily be transmitted to people who have not been vaccinated or immunized against the diseases. As a safety measure, the World Health Organization usually issues statements concerning the likelihood of contagious ailments that are present within the country that the holiday makers want to visit.

Some diseases are not contagious; however certain diseases can be transmitted from animals to humans. Travellers should be cautious when consuming unfamiliar foods, for the reason that such foods can cause stomach upset. This is particularly true for individuals with sensitive stomachs. Raw or fresh food items should be consumed cautiously and only if the food item is obtained from a reliable source for example the hotel restaurant.

Most reliable vacation agencies are not just concerned about the health of the travelling group, but their physical safety also. Certain countries are not appropriate for a vacation, particularly countries that are experiencing political or economic instability. Other safety measures that an exotic vacation agency might suggest are to take good care of travel documents such as passports, and to be wary of thieves and pickpockets who target foreign nationals. Losing one’s money and passport outside of the US can be risky and in such instances, the help of the US embassy might be required. It is always best to listen to as well as take the advice given by the embassy if something goes wrong. Pakistan President Musharraf in Kabul for talks

   Posted by: Admin   in Uncategorized

Wednesday, September 6, 2006

The President of Pakistan, Pervez Musharraf is in Kabul for a two-day visit during which he is scheduled to hold talks with his Afghan counterpart, Hamid Karzai. The talks are expected to focus on the continuing militant activity on both sides of the border, with Taliban forces allegedly infiltrating into Afghanistan from across the border in Pakistan.

Economic cooperation and reconstruction in Afghanistan are also on the agenda. President Musharraf is scheduled to meet cabinet ministers and address parliamentarians tomorrow. His delegation includes ministers for foreign and religious affairs and the petroleum sector, and the head of Pakistan’s intelligence agency.

“Frank discussions on the war on terror and expanding bilateral cooperation on regional issues,” read a statement by President Karzai’s office.

Pakistan foreign office spokeswoman Tasnim Aslam told AFP news agency that the Presidents “will exchange views on bilateral relations, economic cooperation, reconstruction activities in Afghanistan and cooperation in the fight against terrorism,”

“Afghanistan is expecting the Islamic Republic of Pakistan to take effective action against terrorism,” Afghan Foreign Ministry spokesman Sultan Ahmad Baheen said.

Pakistan signed a peace agreement with pro-Taliban militants in the North Waziristan region on the eve of the visit. The deal aims to end years of unrest in the border province. Under its terms the Pakistan military forces and militants will stop attacks on each other and the militants have agreed to disarm or expel foreign Al-Qaeda-linked fighters in the area. Pakistan has rejected criticism that the deal will allow pro-Taliban forces to operate freely in the area.

“Pakistan is committed to its policy on war on terror, and Osama caught anywhere in Pakistan would be brought to justice,” army spokesman Maj. Gen. Shaukat Sultan told the Associated Press.

On Wednesday, President Karzai met the NATO General Secretary Jaap de Hoop Scheffer in Kabul and signed an accord aimed at boosting security and development in the country. The NATO chief warned that “some of the terrorists, the spoilers, think they can win in the south,”, adding “They are wrong. Because they cannot win, they will not win, […] That is why we are engaged in combat as well at this very moment.”

The visit comes amidst an upsurge in violence in Afghanistan, with US forces saying that 60 militants were killed by artillery and air-strikes on Tuesday. Some 700 more are believed to be surrounded by soldiers in an operation in Khandahar province.

NATO and Afghan forces launched an operation in Khandahar’s Panjwayi district last weekend, and NATO reports 250 militants as killed in the operations, though a Taliban commander has disputed the figure and there is no independent confirmation of the toll. Hundreds have been killed in continuing fighting between government and international security forces and insurgents in the last four months.

An estimated 1500 families have been displaced by the fighting in Khandahar.

Suspected Taliban militants shot dead two muslim clerics in Lashkar Gah, capital of the Helmand province in the last two days and raided a district headquarters in the town of Arghandad in Zabul province.

Musharraf last visited Afghanistan in 2002. Afghanistan has previously complained that Pakistan is not doing enough to combat Taliban insurgency in its side of the 2,250km (1,400-mile) mountainous border between the two countries. Earlier in the year, allegations by Afghanistan that Taliban and Al-Qaeda leaders were living in Pakistan were dismissed by Musharraf as “nonsense”. In February, Afghanistan issued a list of 150 Taliban suspects it said were living in Pakistan. President Musharraf dismissed the information as “old and outdated”, but President Karzai reiterated that the list was up-to-date.

Some Al-Qaeda and Taliban leaders have been arrested in Pakistan, which has also stationed close to 80,000 troops along the Afghan borders. There is international pressure on Musharraf to deal with Islamist groups in Pakistan who are believed to assist Taliban forces.

“Pakistan has the potential to be the solution to the problems of Afghanistan,” Afghan foreign ministry advisor Ali Muradian said.”We hope that President Musharraf will open a new chapter in relations between Afghanistan and Pakistan.”

Pakistan was closely associated with the Taliban’s rise to power in the 90s one of only three nations that recognised the then Taliban government.

While state run dailies Kabul Times and Hewad expressed hope that two leaders will work together to improve security, The daily Cheragh said that while statements about restoring security can be expected from the meeting, “as experience has shown”, previous pledges by Pakistan “have not been fulfilled”.

Kabul Times also said Afghanistan was grateful for Pakistan’s help to thousands of Afghan refugees.

“The key concern is whether the agreement is going to lead to more insurgents going to and fro across the border or less,” A diplomat told AFP, while another questioned Pakistan’s peace deal with the militants.

Recalled pet food found to contain rat poison

   Posted by: Admin   in Uncategorized

Friday, March 23, 2007

In a press release earlier today, New York State Agriculture Commissioner Patrick Hooker, along with Dean of Cornell University’s College of Veterinary Medicine Donald F. Smith, confirmed that scientists at the New York State Food Laboratory identified Aminopterin as a toxin present in cat food samples from Menu Foods.

Menu Foods is the manufacturer of several brands of cat and dog food subject to a March 16, 2007 recall.

Aminopterin is a drug used in chemotherapy for its immunosuppressive properties and, in some areas outside the US, as a rat poison. Earlier reports stated that wheat gluten was a factor being investigated, and officials now state that the toxin would have come from Chinese wheat used in the pet food, where it is used for pest control. Investigators will not say that this is the only contaminant found in the recalled food, but knowing the identity of the toxin should assist veterinarians treating affected animals.

The Food Laboratory tested samples of cat food received from a toxicologist at the New York State Animal Health Diagnostic Center at Cornell University. The samples were found to contain the rodenticide at levels of at least 40 parts per million.

Commissioner Hooker stated, “We are pleased that the expertise of our New York State Food Laboratory was able to contribute to identifying the agent that caused numerous illnesses and deaths in dogs and cats across the nation.”

The press release suggests Aminopterin, a derivative of folic acid, can cause cancer and birth defects in humans and can cause kidney damage in dogs and cats. Aminopterin is not permitted for use in the United States.

The New York State Food Laboratory is part of the Federal Food Emergency Response Network (FERN) and as such, is capable of running a number of unique poison/toxin tests on food, including the test that identified Aminopterin.

Bush’s Iraq ‘Strategy’ seen as public relations exercise

   Posted by: Admin   in Uncategorized

Sunday, December 4, 2005

The US commander of the Multinational Security Transition Command in Iraq said that he had no knowledge of the National Strategy for Victory in Iraq document released by the US President. This, along with speculation that the document was chiefly authored by a public opinion analyst recruited by the White House have led to some critics claiming that the drafted ‘strategy’ is targeting US public opinion, not the Iraqi insurgency.

The military, political and economic strategy for Iraq, outlined last week by President Bush in a speech at the Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland, was based by a 35-page document titled the National Strategy for Victory in Iraq. A metadata tag on the document posted on the White House website identified its author as a computer user ‘feaver_p’. It is believed to refer to Dr. Peter D. Feaver, a special advisor to the National Security Council staff.

A political scientist at Duke University, Dr. Feaver analyzed public opinion polls about the Iraq war and attitudes towards war casualties. Dr. Feaver found that US public opinion will support military engagement abroad, despite growing casualties, provided that the public believed that the war was being fought for a worthy cause and that victory was achievable.

Dr. Feaver was one of the people who helped “conceive and draft” the document, according to a White House staffer, who said that Meghan L. O’Sullivan, the deputy national security adviser for Iraq and Afghanistan, and her staff played a larger role. White House officials confirmed to the New York Times that the document’s “creation and presentation strongly reflected the public opinion research”.

The document “reflects the broad interagency effort under way in Iraq” according to an NSC spokesman Frederick Jones and had received major contributions from the Departments of Defense, State, Treasury and Homeland Security, as well as the director of National Intelligence.

On Friday, Lt. Gen. Martin Dempsey, whose Multinational Security Transition Command is responsible for building Iraq’s security forces, told reporters that he had seen the strategy document for the first time when it was released to the public. The White House had said that not all senior officers in Iraq had necessarily seen the document and Gen. Peter Pace, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, has said that he had read and critiqued the document on several occasions.

Earlier, replying to questions about the President’s strategy, White House press secretary Scott McClellan said that the document was an “inter-agency document” and an “unclassified version” of the administrations “strategy for victory in Iraq” published for the public to view.

Christopher F. Gelpi, of Duke University, who co-authored Dr. Feaver’s work titled Casualty Sensitivity and the War in Iraq, stated, “The Pentagon doesn’t need the president to give a speech and post a document on the White House Web site to know how to fight the insurgents. The document is clearly targeted at American public opinion.” In their work together, Gelpi, Feaver and Reifler found that the most important factor which determines the US public’s tolerance for US military deaths in a war is the public’s beliefs about the likelihood of success, and a secondary, but still important, factor, was found to be the public’s belief in the rightness of a war.

A Beginner’s Guide To Sports Betting

   Posted by: Admin   in Betting

Sports betting is a blend of two of mans paramount interests: sports and betting. Its definitely no surprise that the two pastimes function so well together. Any time a band of sports fans are found together, the excitement leads to shouting and bets are placed. In every sport, there are always some games that are thought to be the most crucial of the season and the tension grows as the date of the game approaches. Concurrently, the bets start to pile up.

Since no one knows in advance how the game will turn out, it is always a matter of educated guessing as to which team will be victorious and by how many points. Sports betting might appear to be addictive and, although, for some, it can be, for nearly all people its just for entertainment and a lot of fun it is! It gives you a more stimulating way to interact with your comrades about a subject in which you have a lot in common. Since the final score can not be known until the end of the game, having a bet made makes the thrill last all the way through the game.

While there is generally informal betting between friends, most wagers are made through what is known as a sports book which is an entity that accepts sports betting, In the US, there are only 4 states where sports betting is legally allowed. Elsewhere, you need to deal with a bookie and to make a bet you have to be over the age of 21. Some of the sports you can bet on are horse racing, dog racing, professional hockey, professional baseball, and professional and college football and basketball. In truth, sports betting is placing bets on anything that is a recognized sport. You can wager on the final score of a game, how many points by which a team will win, who will win a boxing match and in what round they will be declared the winner. The only thing that is known in advance is the odds which is the statistical likelihood of winning or losing a particular bet.

A bookie will indicate what the odds are at any particular moment to help you choose how to lay down your wager and for how much. A point spread is like a handicap given to what is thought to be the weaker team so as to equalize the likelihood of gambling either way. A gambler might bet on a losing team and still win provided that the team loses by a precise number of points. You might be required to enter your bet a bit higher than what you could be expected to win. The remainder goes to the bookie as his or her way of earning money on the wagers you enter.

It can seem a bit complicated for a beginner. There are a number of different kinds of bets including over/unders, teasers, parlays and straight bets. The most usual and easiest to learn is the straight bet on a team you think will win or lose. You can lay a wager on the combined number of points scored by both teams. These bets are labeled over/unders. Combined bets on many games are called parlays. You can add or subtract points from the spread to make a stronger bet in a teaser which is similar to a parlay. All of these betting styles are created to make sports betting more interesting and challenging.

Those are the fundamentals of sports betting should you wish to try your luck and have some fun. Remember to keep your bets small. In this way, it will always be fun. If you lose a trivial amount, you can live with that and recover from it smiling. If you get carried away and bet the farm, it will be a calamity when you lose and that cannot be much fun. Only an addicted gambler would ever bet the farm.

Wikinews extended invitations by e-mail on March 23 to multiple candidates running in the Texas’ 6th congressional district special election of May 1 to fill a vacancy left upon the death of Republican congressman Ron Wright. Of them, the office of Democrat Daryl Eddings, Sr. agreed to answer some questions by phone March 30 about their campaigns and policies. The following is the interview with Ms Chatham on behalf of Mr Eddings, Sr.

Eddings is a federal law enforcement officer and senior non-commissioned officer in the US military. His experience as operations officer of an aviation unit in the California National Guard includes working in Los Angeles to control riots sparked by the O. J. Simpson murder case and the police handling of Rodney King, working with drug interdiction teams in Panama and Central America and fighting in the Middle East. He is the founder of Operation Battle Buddy, which has under his leadership kept in touch with over 20 thousand veterans and their families. He was born in California, but moved to Midlothian, Texas. He endeavours to bring “good government, not no government”. Campaign manager Faith Chatham spoke to Wikinews on matters ranging from healthcare to housing.

An Inside Elections poll published on March 18 shows Republican candidate Susan Wright, the widow of Ron Wright, is ahead by 21% followed by Democrat Jana Sanchez with 17% and Republican Jake Ellzey with 8% with a 4.6% margin of error among 450 likely voters. The district is considered “lean Republican” by Inside Elections and voted 51% in favour of Donald Trump in last year’s US presidential election. This is down from 54% for Trump in 2016’s presidential election, the same poll stated.

A General in the Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA) and dean at the National Defense University in China commented to visiting Hong Kong reporters on Friday that the PLA might use nuclear weapons against the U.S., in a conflict over the Taiwan Strait. “If the Americans draw their missiles and position-guided ammunition onto the target zone on China’s territory, I think we will have to respond with nuclear weapons,” Maj. Gen. Zhu Chenghu said to the reporters of the Asian Wall Street Journal and the Financial Times. “We Chinese will prepare ourselves for the destruction of all of the cities east of Xian [in central China]. Of course the Americans will have to be prepared that hundreds … of cities will be destroyed by the Chinese.”

U.S. State Department spokesman Sean McCormack called the remarks “highly irresponsible” and “unfortunate”, and expressed the hope that they did not reflect the views of the Chinese government.

Echoing the official Xinhua News Agency, the People’s Republic of China’s Foreign Ministry officials said that Zhu was expressing personal views, and had warned the reporters accordingly, but stated that China would never tolerate “Taiwan independence”. Reportedly, Maj. Gen. Zhu is not directly involved in the formulation of Chinese military strategy.

The U.S. may defend Taiwan under the Taiwan Relations Act and is currently Taiwan’s largest arms supplier.

Wal-Mart cuts ties with PR consultant over controversial Republican TV ad

   Posted by: Admin   in Uncategorized

Monday, October 30, 2006

Wal-Mart severed links with Terry Nelson, a Republican strategist, last night because he had connections to a controversial Republican Party advertisement in Tennessee. The ad’s purpose was to blast Democratic Senate candidate Harold Ford Jr, who is running against Republican Bob Corker.

A blonde woman in the ad says, “I met Harold at the Playboy party”. As the spot ends, she winks and says breathily: “Harold, call me!”. The ad also “criticised” Canada. “Canada can take care of North Korea,” a man in the television ad says. “They’re not busy.”

Nelson and his company, CrossLink Strategy Group, were hired by Wal-Mart last year in an attempt to help the company.

Jesse Jackson, an American politician, and other leaders signed a letter distributed by WakeUpWal-Mart.com, asking the company to end its relationship with Nelson.

In an interview with the Associated Press Nelson said, “There was no intention to offend anybody and it’s unfortunate if people took offense. That was certainly not what people planned for or hoped for.”

A spokesman for Wal-Mart, David Tovar, issued a statement saying Nelson’s company had “sent a letter to Wal-Mart ending its working relationship with our company.”

By Adriana Copaceanu

My husband and I have recently begun thinking about adding an addition to our home. Let’s face it, though, the recent housing market has made moving up to a bigger house, a much more expensive proposition. We also agreed that even with our big family, that although extra space would be nice, we won’t always need it so we questioned the ‘permanency’ of buying a bigger home OR adding on to our current home. There’s always the question of ‘out pricing’ your home in the current neighborhood if you add on as well. So we’ve kind of let the idea go until now.

My most recent thought and very serious consideration is buying a shed! Now, not your average box shed put up in a few hours type, but a professionally made and delivered model. I’ve had friends who have turned their sheds into home offices, quilting rooms, art studios and a slew of other things, but the idea of turning OUR shed into entertainment space for our boys is a new idea on the block!

Here are some things to ponder when toying with the idea of purchasing the shed versus adding on to your home. In our area, building costs are at least $150/sq foot. An addition to your home is assessed as a permanent structure and thus costs more in property taxes, where as a shed is NOT permanent and is assessed differently (check with your local assessor in your area as well). You will probably need permits either way you go, BUT a shed is generally a much easier proposition. Obviously, your shed can be used for ‘temporary’ type space such as office, game room, quilting room, etc. BUT, there may be strict codes in your town in regards to making it a bedroom for one of your children, so WHAT you need the space for is something to consider.

Now, a call to our local, reputable shed builder revealed the following information. The largest shed I can purchase is 14′ X 48′ (672 square feet of space!). I decided to get the vinyl storage shed as I would have done vinyl siding for an addition as well (and I’m a low maintenance chick to be honest!), and I wanted to compare apples to apples as much as possible.

Now, this model comes with an insulated floor and the supports are 16′ off center so I can put in regular insulation into the walls, too. It would come fully assembled and placed right on my site, either on a cement pad OR blocks (local regulations might have some say in this and would probably be covered in your permit). It also comes with house style windows! The price was $13,300. I would still have to insulate and run wiring in this shed and then finish the walls, BUT when I figured out the cost of a 672 sq/foot addition at $150/sq foot was $100,800.00, I could definitely spend a bit more to hire the electrician and insulate and finish off the interior myself, add a space heater, curtains, hot tub and send myself on a cruise for the roughly $85,000 savings of my shed over the addition!

The builder also confirmed my idea that a shed is definitely taxed differently, regardless of HOW it’s used. It’s NOT a permanent structure (hmmm, could we take our ‘addition’ with us if we moved?). Again, you’d have to check with your town to confirm YOUR tax code, but I suspect it’s about the same everywhere.

So, don’t look at a wood shed as just something for wood or lawnmowers! Think of that shed as a bonus room!
