Conditioning: Dot drilling

Conditioning is meant to increase speed, endurance, and reaction time on the football field. The intent of this drill is to increase accuracy, timing, and speed. The drill set up is a mat or place on the field with 5 dots about a foot away from each other forming an X shape, exactly in the same shape as you would see diamonds arranged on a number five card in a poker deck.

The athlete starts at the edge of the mat placing their feet on two of the outer dots and proceeds to jump with feet together on the center spot and then out again quickly to the outer dots similar to a simple hop scotch motion. The second phase is having the player touch each of the dots with only one foot, and then switch to the other foot. Then continue around the dots with both legs together. The last phase is really returning to the original starting phase of jumping together and apart, however this time the athlete will change directions after they have jumped to the outer dots. Because this drill is intended for accuracy and speed, it is recommended that players start out slow and deliberate and then speed up to their maximum time.

Conditioning: The Quick Jump

Football is all about action and reaction, and those that practice reacting quickly in a variety of directions will dominate the field. This practice drill is intended to increase reaction speed and the ability to quickly change directions. It starts by placing players in a small four square box. Once a players positions themselves in one of the corners they will proceed to jump from one corner of the area to other in either a patterned function or randomly. Coaches should encourage one foot jumping to increase further strength and reactions on the field.

Whether you are a quarterback, running back, or a player that at anytime will receive a hand off you need to realize the basics of a great hand off. Lets look at a simple hand off between a quarterback and a running back to point out the fundamentals of this skill. The running back starts the hand off running towards the quarterback with his arms open creating a pocket for the quarterback to slide the football right into the running backs chest. When the quarterback slides the ball into the arms, or the pocket as it is called, the running back closes his arms around the ball to protect it. Now that the running back has the ball when he leaves the quarterback he should remain low to the ground in order to react quickly on the field.

Gauntlet Drill for Ball Security

There is nothing more important for offense to learn great ball security. This of course is even more important for wide receivers and running backs as they handle the ball more than most. A great drill called the gauntlet practices ball security. The point to the gauntlet drill is to have a player run through several opponents that try to dislodge the football. Each of the defenders can line up in any way making the ball carrier run any sort of patterns with the ball, the point is to pose a challenge to hold onto the ball. To be effective with this drill have the ball carrier run the drill holding the ball in several different positions.

Costa Del Sol Oil Drill Plans Come Under Fire

With the recent BP Deepwater disaster still spilling out in to the Gulf of Mexico, tarnishing such vital tourism spots as Florida and New Orleans, European destinations are beginning to take note of the risk of offshore drilling, and the danger it can pose to bustling tourist destinations. Florida Governor Charlie Crist is already proposing a constitutional ban of drilling offshore Florida, to prevent a similar disaster losing the billions of dollars lost in this spill, now many hope the Costa Del Sol may do similar by preventing Repsol’s proposed drill on their shores.

Repsol-YPF have proposed drilling a site just nine miles away from the busy tourist spots of Mijos, Cabopino and Fuengirola. The spot is a 16 square kilometre spread of oil, identified by a 2005 seismic survey, and Repsol hope to start test drilling by the beginning of January next year.

Yet the plans have fallen under fire from Ecological groups such as Ecologistas en Accion, who believe that the drill could cause no end of detriment to the Costa Del Sol’s tourist industry, and expressing concern for the area’s wildlife and nature. It is completely incompatible with with both tourism and environmental interests of the Costa Del Sol, a spokesman for Ecologistas en Accion, commented.

Tourism represents the Costa Del Sol’s largest source of income, accounting for over a billion Euros a year as it brings in over 10 million visitors. Earlier this year we have seen American Tourism take a considerable blow as hot spots such as Destin have remained relatively empty over the summer period. Ecologistas en Accion have already submitted their concerns in reports to the Environment Ministry prior to public consultation deadline.

Meanwhile Repsol are insistent its plans to drill will not affect the Costa Del Sol coastline. The construction is said to be designed for low visibility, using an underwater well head rather than floating platform. The oil is then to be transported by a submarine conduit to a base being built on the shore.

Repsol are planning their test drill for the beginning of next year so as not to interfere with the migration of Whales, who will have completed their travels by then. This test drill will determine whether there is enough gas to make the endeavor economically viable. Yet before this procedure can go ahead the company must first receive clearance from Spain’s Environment Ministry.

The Environment Ministry have already started procedure in to whether this may be an environmentally friendly pursuit and are set to make their decision by the end of September.

Spain’s Industry Ministry has already cleared plans for the drill.
