Romania announces 18 percent increase in tourists in 2004

   Posted by: Admin    in Uncategorized

Sunday, February 27, 2005

Bucharest, Romania — 6.6 million tourists visited Romania in 2004, marking an 18% increase over 2003, announced the National Authority for Tourism (ANT). This was one of the highest rates of tourism growth in Europe. However, it remains slightly below the number of Romanians who spent their holidays in other countries throughout 2004 – a figure of 6.9 million.

Carmen Moraru, the promotion and marketing director at ANT said that many tourists came as part of holiday packages or tours, organised around the regions of Maramure?, Transylvania, Moldova, the Prahova Valley and the Danube Delta.

In 2005, the number of tourist arrivals is set to rise further, mainly due to a Romanian promotion campaign launched across Europe. The country’s tourist revival is mainly due to its diversity – it is home to Europe’s largest delta, the Black Sea Coast with its resorts, the Carpathian Mountains with their skiing and winter activities, Transylvania with its ecotourism, agritourism and beautiful landscapes, as well as the medieval history of cities like Sibiu and Sighi?oara.

Ranil Wickremesinghe sworn in as Sri Lankan President

   Posted by: Admin    in Uncategorized

Sunday, July 24, 2022

Ranil Wickremesinghe was sworn in as the ninth President of Sri Lanka at a ceremony in the country’s Parliament in Colombo on Thursday.

Wickremesinghe, who has served as acting president in his predecessor’s absence, defeated rival candidates for the presidency by 134 votes to 82, with support from MPs of the ruling Sri Lanka People’s Front.

The former president, Gotabaya Rajapaksa, fled Sri Lanka for the Maldives on July 13 and tendered his resignation from Singapore the following day. This came after months of unrest and protests over a devastating economic crisis which saw soaring inflation, blackouts and shortages of many essential supplies.

Wickremesinghe initially offered to resign alongside Rajapaksa; however following the president’s exodus he assumed the role of acting president. Wickremesinghe served as prime minister under Rajapaksa, and the BBC reports many view his administration as complicit in mismanaging the economy.

Nevertheless, the transition of power drew relatively few protests. “He is here — and we will see what his actions are. If we don’t get any food, any medicine, we’ll be on the streets,” a former protestor told the BBC.

I am not a friend of the Rajapaksas. I am a friend of the people.

Anbarasan Ethirajan, writing for the BBC, reported other protesters’ disappointment, worrying Wickremesinghe would gradually crack down and forcibly end the protests. For his part, Wickremesinghe said he supports peaceful demonstrations, but warned against occupying government buildings and attempts to overthrow the government.

Wickremesinghe has held many senior positions during his 45-year political career, including serving six terms as prime minister. He unsuccessfully ran for President twice. Local media reports the next cabinet is expected to include ministers from opposition parties, who have agreed to work with Wickremesinghe.

The new president will strive for stability ahead of resuming talks with the International Monetary Fund for a $3 billion bailout.

Looted, possibly contaminated body parts transplanted into USA, Canadian patients

   Posted by: Admin    in Uncategorized

Monday, March 20, 2006

Fears of contaminated bone and skin grafts are being felt by unsuspecting patients following the revelation that funeral homes may have been looting corpses.

Janet Evans of Marion, Ohio was told by her surgeon, “The bone grafts you got might have been contaminated”. She reacted with shock, “I was flabbergasted because I didn’t even know what he was talking about. I didn’t know I got a bone graft until I got this call. I just thought they put in screws and rods.”

The body of Alistair Cooke, the former host of Masterpiece Theatre, was supposedly looted along with more than 1,000 others, according to two law enforcement officials close to the case. The tissue taken was typically skin, bone and tendon, which was then sold for use in procedures such as dental implants and hip replacements. According to authorities, millions of dollars were made by selling the body parts to companies for use in operations done at hospitals and clinics in the United States and Canada.

A New Jersey company, Biomedical Tissue Services, has reportedly been taking body parts from funeral homes across Brooklyn, New York. According to ABC News, they set up rooms like a “surgical suite.” After they took the bones, they replaced them with PVC pipe. This was purportedly done by stealth, without approval of the deceased person or the next of kin. 1,077 bodies were involved, say prosecutors.

Investagators say a former dentist, Michael Mastromarino, is behind the operation. Biomedical was considered one of the “hottest procurement companies in the country,” raking in close to $5 million. Eventually, people became worried: “Can the donors be trusted?” A tissue processing company called LifeCell answered no, and issued a recall on all their tissue.

Cooke’s daughter, Susan Cooke Kittredge, said, “To know his bones were sold was one thing, but to see him standing truncated before me is another entirely.” Now thousands of people around the country are receiving letters warning that they should be tested for infectious diseases like HIV or hepatitis. On February 23, the Brooklyn District Attorney indicted Mastromarino and three others. They are charged with 122 felony counts, including forgery and bodysnatching.

How To Erase Warts On Your Feet – 6 Common Cures

by

Sean Saunders

All types of warts are caused by the human papillomavirus viral infection that is also known by its initials, HPV. Nearly 40 percentage of people world wide are experiencing this viral infection. The human virus lives under the skin layers feeding on the nourishment obtained from the blood vessels. Feet is one region where warts appear more frequently and the type of warts which is noticed here is called plantar warts. There are several ways that you can use to get rid of warts on feet effectively. Plantar warts are extremely contagious because the HPV virus thrives in sultry humid environments such as locker rooms and the skin layers from the feet are shed very easily. It is easy to differentiate between warts and other foot problems like corns or callouses. Warts on the feet have a characteristic look very similar to that of a cauliflower and the outer tissue of the warts is covered with a lot of small black spots. There are two basic ways to get rid of warts on feet; medical treatment and home treatment. Listed below are a couple of wart treatment options which you can consider and we have discussed about the effectiveness and affordability of these treatment options in detail.

1. Surgical Wart Removal – There are three different types of surgical procedures that can be use to get rid of warts on feet; electrosurgery, laser surgery and cryosurgery. All of these surgical procedures need to be done in a hospital, clinic or in a doctor’s office. They can involve a lot of expense and considerable pain. Let us have a look at these surgical procedures a bit more elaborately. 2. Cryosurgery for Warts – If you decide on cryosurgery, also called cryotherapy, then the doctor is going to use liquid nitrogen to freeze your warts of. Freezing the wart tissue causes a blister to form underneath that could be removed easily at a later stage. This also kills the HPV virus. Quite often this form of surgery does not leave scars but it is painful. 3. Electrosurgery for Warts – The most commonly used method of surgery to get rid of wars on feet is electrosurgery. In this procedure, the doctor attempts to burn off the wart tissue by passing electric current through a thin needle. This method can leave some scarring but is not painful. 4. Wart Laser Surgery – Laser surgery is a very effective method of removing warts but it is usually the last choice as it is very painful and very expensive. It will remove warts so that they don’t reoccur but can leave scarring. 5. Home Wart Removal – Salicylic acid is the main ingredient in many over the counter pharmaceutical products that are used to get rid of warts on feet. Plantar warts may be removed in about a month using this product at home. The acid present in these creams softens and dissolves the hard wart tissue. 6. Duct Tape for Warts – You can also use an item that many people have around the house to remove your warts. Duct tape is a popular solution for many people to remove Plantar warts from their feet. Just cut a small piece of duct tape, slightly bigger than the size of your wart and secure it firmly over the wart tissue. Keep this in place for about 5-7 days. Then remove the tape and soak your feet in hot water. Using any kind of abrasive material such a pumice stone, scrape the dead wart tissue until it is completely removed. Some people suggest putting a small piece of garlic under the tap so the oil from it will soften tissue and destroy the virus.

On Wednesday, heavy rains and resulting flooding were confirmed to have killed over 300 people in KwaZulu-Natal province on the eastern coast of South Africa, including the large port city of Durban.

eThekwini Metropolitan Municipality was heavily damaged. Mayor Mxolisi Kaunda said it was hard to reach power and water facilities. Sipho Hlomuka of the Executive Council for Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs in KwaZulu-Natal said: “The heavy rains have affected power lines in many municipalities with technical teams working around the clock to restore power.”

Hiker missing from US state of Utah wilderness found in Australia

   Posted by: Admin    in Uncategorized

Tuesday, August 23, 2005

A man missing from a camping ground in southern Utah in the Western US since July 30 was found in Australia. His automobile was found in a campground of Dixie National Forest with a note that he would be back in a few hours. An extensive search and rescue operation was conducted to try to locate this hiker by the Washington County Sheriff’s Office in Utah.

Investigators in the Sheriff’s Office were able to track him down to Cairns, Queensland. Apparently before he was “missing”, he bought a one-way ticket to Australia. Bryan Butas, the missing hiker, apparently had been under a great deal of stress and “got sick of it all”, according to a telephone interview by the Associated Press.

Butas has been charged with insurance fraud, a second-degree felony, by Washington County Attorney Brock Belnap. This was because Butas plotted to obtain a $250,000 life insurance policy before faking his own disappearance. He has also been given a bill for $20,000 by the Washington County Sheriff’s Office for their search and rescue operations on his behalf.

His wife and children have since his disappearance moved to the wife’s parent’s home in Ohio. Butas’s parents came to Southern Utah to help in the search and were “embarrassed and shocked” to learn their son had merely run away from marital and financial difficulties, Washington County Sheriff Kirk Smith said.

Washington County Sheriff Sgt. Jake Adams said his investigation included tracing an application Butas made for a passport, his purchase of a one-way airline ticket to Australia, and the life insurance policy that names his wife and children as beneficiaries. On August 18, Adams said Butas’s mother called him to say her son had called home the evening of August 11, several days after the search was officially called off for the missing man. Butas asked his mother for money and an airline ticket home, which she sent.

Butas has since been checked into the Veteran’s Administration Hospital in Brecksville, Ohio, according to Adams, but will shortly return to Utah.

You’ll have a certain solution injected into the area where the fat will be removed from, (solution that has the purpose of numbing that area) and after that, the surgery will commence.

Tummy tuck

If you have fat on your stomach and no exercise has helped you remove it, then it might be necessary to consider a tummy tuck. This type of surgery involves cutting the excess fatty tissue and skin through your abdomen. The process may tighten your abdominal muscles and reshape your abdomen. Also, if you have side love handles, they will also be removed.Be sure that before you’ll go with any of these procedures, to do a lot of research. There are risks as with any type of surgery, like shock, scarring, skin damage, nerve damage, blood clots and infections. To include the risks of tummy tucks, they include swelling, infection, bleeding, blood clots and so forth.
