US Defense Secretary evaluates Iraq and the political climate

   Posted by: Admin    in Uncategorized

Friday, April 6, 2007

U.S. Defence Secretary Robert Gates warned that limiting funding for the United States efforts in Iraq could lead to more bloodshed in the Middle Eastern country. In an interview with radio talk show host Laura Ingraham, he said it might even lead to ethnic cleansing in Bahgdad and elsewhere in Iraq.

Gates’ comment followed a proposal from Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid to end most spending on the Iraq war in 2008, limiting it to targeted operations against al Qaeda, training for Iraqi troops and U.S. force protection.

Sec. Gates also said that the duration of the troop increase is not clear and that evaluating whether the Administration’s new strategy was working will have to wait till mid-summer. The Army general charged with day-to-day operations has suggested that the increased deployment may extend to early next year.

The Do s and Don ts of Summer Skin Care

by

Dr. Arlette s

Looking young and beautiful has always been in style. These days, however, it seems that looking healthy has become even more important. Perhaps the most effective way of maintaining a young, healthy body is by taking care of your skin. Wrinkles, dark spots and uneven skin tones these are all some of the most noticeable signs of aging. So, how can you avoid or at least prolong the effects of age on your skin? By taking proper care of it especially during the summer. To help you develop an effective skincare regimen that will keep you looking young and exuberant, the experts at the Total Skincare Centre in Calgary have come up with a list of Do s and Don ts of Summer Skin Care.

DO

Wear sunscreen. This should be a given, but many people still feel that having a base tan will help them build up an immunity to the sun s harmful UV rays. Those people would be wrong! Wearing sunscreen is one of the best things you can do to keep your skin looking young. If you have sensitive skin, you should visit Dr. John Arlette our resident dermatologist here at the Total Skin Care Centre. He will help you choose a sunscreen that is effective and won t irritate your skin.

Try to find one moisturizer that has everything you need. Not only will this save you time, but it will also reduce the possibility of irritating the skin. To find a sunscreen that best suits your skin type, visit the Total Skin Care Centre in Calgary.

Exfoliate. The grainy texture of an exfoliant will help remove dead skin cells, leaving you with skin as soft as a baby s bottom! Be careful not to overdo it your skin is sensitive. Talk to a dermatologist about the exfoliant and frequency of application that is best for your skin.

Use a self-tanner. We know it feels nice to be tanned when you re showing some skin on the beach or by the pool. Instead of burning your skin in the sun, try a self-tanning lotion or a spray tan. With a self-tanner, you can get some colour without over-exposing yourself to the sun s harmful UV rays.

DON T

Sunbathe. If you re going to be in the sun, try to keep yourself as covered up as possible, and wear lots of sunscreen.

Drink too much coffee. While you may need one cup a day to keep you going, don t drink any more if you can avoid it! Too much coffee can dehydrate your skin, making it look dull and tired.

Don t use too many products. No matter how eager you are to try out new products, try not too use too many at one time. This could irritate your skin, leaving you with a rash or blemishes.

Don t use harsh toners. They tend to strip your skin of moisture, which could worsen your skin s condition.

Don t use scrubs or exfoliate too often. Exfoliating too often doesn t give your skin enough time to heal from your previous scrub. The general rule is to exfoliate no more than two times a week.

Car crash enrages bees

   Posted by: Admin    in Uncategorized

Friday, August 4, 2006

A 16 year old girl has crashed her car into a hollow tree stirring up the fury of a swarm of bees ten miles (16km) south of Fort Wayne, Indiana. Ten people including the girl received treatment at a hospital.

Jacqueline Cossairt’s SUV crashed into the tree after she lost control on a gravel road.

Despite hot summer temperatures, firefighters wore full safety gear including face mask and oxygen tanks as they tried to rescue her from the wreck. The bees were doused with foam and water.

“Those bees were mad,” said Volunteer Fire Chief Kent Gilbert, who was stung at least 50 times while trying to pull her from the wreckage. “I’ve never seen bees, especially honeybees, attack like that.”

“I’m not too swelled up,” Gilbert said. “As long as I’m standing upright, I feel OK, but if I bend down I get a headache. The back of my head is real tender where they stung me.”

Jacqueline was taken to Lutheran Hospital with broken legs and multiple bee stings.

A neighbour, a paramedic and seven firefighters were also hospitalized due to heat and bee stings.

Stan Grove, a biology professor at Goshen College, said that bees were most active during summer as they try to keep their hives cool by flapping their wings.

“They don’t like to be jostled,” said Grove.

Study: Women susceptible to high dietary glycemic load

   Posted by: Admin    in Uncategorized

Tuesday, April 13, 2010

Women who eat “high-glycemic” foods, which cause blood sugar levels to spike, are at risk for coronary disease, according to a large study of Italians published in the Archives of Internal Medicine, a publication of the American Medical Association. In this study men were not affected the same way, but the researchers said that more studies were needed to verify that there is really no association between a high dietary glycemic load and cardiovascular disease in men.

Sabina Sieri of the Fondazione IRCCS Istituto Nazionale dei Tumori in Milan, Italy, who led the study, said that “high consumption of carbohydrate from high-glycemic foods, rather than overall quantity of carbohydrate consumed, appears to influence the risk of developing heart disease in women.” Sieri added, “It’s a good idea for people to choose foods with a lower glycemic index over higher ones.”

Sieri and her colleagues studied 47,749 Italian adults (15,171 men and 32,578 women), who were asked to complete dietary questionnaires. Women whose diet had the highest glycemic load had 2.24 times the risk of heart disease.

They don’t know why they think you’re bad, they just know you’re supposed to be bad because the right wing tells them you’re bad.”

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas cuts ties with Israel

   Posted by: Admin    in Uncategorized

Sunday, March 2, 2008

The President of Palestine, Mahmoud Abbas has cut all diplomatic ties and relations with Israel including any and all communications.

Abbas made his decision after recent Israeli crackdown on Palestinian militants has left over 100 people dead and dozens injured. On Saturday March 1, 70 Palestinians were killed in clashes. At least two soldiers of the Israeli Defense Force were also killed.

Abbas says that he will continue his silence towards Israel until “all aggression” against Palestine is stopped.

“The negotiations are suspended, as are all contacts on all levels, because in light of the Israeli aggression such communication has no meaning. The Israeli government has decided to prosecute an unjust war and the open slaughter of our people. It bears sole responsibility for the hindering the peace process and all the effects and consequences of this decision,” said Nabil Abu Rudeina, a spokesman for Abbas in a statement to the media.

According to reports by Africasia quoting Agence France-Presse (AFP), Israel calls the move by Abbas a mistake.

“Suspending peace talks is a mistake and it gives the keys to the negotiations to Hamas,” said an Israeli official to AFP who was not named.

The United States among other nations have called for Israel to stop its strikes, but Prime Minister Ehud Olmert said that “nothing will prevent us from continuing operations to protect our citizens.”
