Dove ad viewed more than 3 million times on YouTube

   Posted by: Admin    in Uncategorized

Saturday, November 4, 2006

An advertisement for Dove beauty products has been viewed by well over three million people, without ever being on television. A copywriter from Ogilvy Toronto, the advertising agency that created a spot named “evolution”, uploaded the advertisement to video sharing website YouTube.

While the official upload of the ad itself has been viewed 1,119,262 times, there are dozens of copies of the ad on YouTube, adding to a minimum of 3,059,546 views. The official copy of the video is the website’s 12th most viewed this month, 53rd of all time.

Unofficial uploads have each received high levels of viewership, with 449595, 445322, 207906, 201670, 195265, 116501, and 102634 plays.

The agency did not originally intend to upload the video to YouTube, only display it on the company’s homepage. Staff member Tim Piper uploaded it to his account on October 6, about a week before it first got media coverage on Good Morning America.

The ad begins with a woman walking into a photo shoot. From there, she is primped and plucked by hair and makeup artists, then tweaked on a Photoshop-like program. The photo-manipulation is then posted on a billboard for the fictional “Easel Foundation Makeup” brand. Two young, teenage girls walk past, glancing at the board. “No wonder our perception of beauty is distorted” ends the ad in text, “Every girl deserves to feel beautiful just the way she is.”

The creative team for the ad included Tim Piper, Mike Kirkland, Janet Kestin, Nancy Vonk, directors T Piper (treatment and post production) and Yael Staav (live action) from Reginald Pike, Soho post production, Rogue editing, Vapor music, Gabor Jurina and Make-up: Diana Carreiro, and Reginald Pike.

The official French copy of the ad has only received 132 views, although it was only uploaded on November 2, 2006.

Also try the 2008 World News Quiz of the year.

What would you tell your grandchildren about 2008 if they asked you about it in, let’s say, 20 years’ time? If the answer to a quiz question was 2008, what would the question be? The year that markets collapsed, or perhaps the year that Obama became US president? Or the year Heath Ledger died?

Let’s take a look at some of the important stories of 2008. Links to the original Wikinews articles are in all the titles.

If you’re looking for a good sleep apnea treatment, I suggest that you do some research before deciding on anything. In many cases, surgery is the only viable option for permanent relief from sleep apnea. However, following surgery on the mouth or throat, the temporary swelling that occurs can be as bad, if not worse, than the sleep apnea itself. Postoperative swelling can have disastrous effects on the airway, making it difficult, if not impossible, to breathe. Because of this, patients who have had tonsillectomies, adenoidectomies or tongue reductions have to be monitored very carefully.

If having a piece of your throat or mouth removed isn’t your sleep apnea treatment of choice, you may want to consider handing the problem with pharmaceuticals. While there are currently no drugs you can take to cure obstructive the sleep apnea, if the blockage is caused by enlarged tonsils or adenoids due to infectious mononucleosis there are prescriptions that can help you. For example, a regimen of anti inflammatory medicines such as prednisone and other glucocorticoid drugs can drastically reduce the lymphoid tissue. Immediately, you’ll see a drastic reduction in snoring and sleep apnea. These effects will be short term, but since the enlargement is also temporary it will be the perfect solution. If not, perhaps neurostimulation will be the answer to your prayers.

Still, if you’re looking for a more natural sleep apnea treatment there are some available. Avoiding alcohol and other medications that relax the central nervous system have been proven to make a difference in some cases. Other natural treatments include losing weight and kicking smoking habits to the curb. If you don’t smoke, don’t drink and aren’t overweight, breathing exercises that are taught in Yoga classes may do the trick. These breathing exercises work to restore muscle function in the throat and mouth.

Open source game developer Perttu Ahola talks about Minetest with Wikinews

   Posted by: Admin    in Uncategorized

Tuesday, June 30, 2020

Recently, Finnish open-source video game developer Perttu Ahola discussed Minetest, his “longest ever project”, with Wikinews.

Started in October 2010, Minetest was an attempt by Ahola to create a sandbox game similar to Minecraft. Minecraft is a multi-platform commercial game, which was in alpha version when Ahola challenged himself to create something similar to it from scratch, he told Wikinews.

Minetest is an open-source game, which is free for anyone to download and play. It is written in the C++ programming language, and the source code is available on code-hosting site GitHub. According to Ahola, Minetest attempts to run on older hardware, with limited graphics, but to be accessible to more people: those who have outdated technology, and making it available for no cost. Minecraft, on the other hand, is a paid game, currently costing USD 26.95 for its computer version. Minecraft is currently owned by Microsoft, and performs poorly on older hardware.

A correspondent from French Wikinews contacted Perttu Ahola via Internet Relay Chat a few weeks ago, discussing Minecraft. This interview is built on top of the previous interview, as we take a deeper dive into knowing more about this free game which is about to turn ten years old in a few months.

Morning-after pill to be made available to 17-year-olds, U.S. federal judge rules

   Posted by: Admin    in Uncategorized

Wednesday, March 25, 2009

A federal judge ruled Monday that the controversial morning-after pill Plan B must be made available without a prescription to girls as young as 17, citing the Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) willingness to concede to the Bush administration’s conservative influences by setting the age limit to 18 in 2006.

Plan B, available in the United States since 1999, consists of two pills designed to prevent conception and must be taken within 72 hours of sexual intercourse. Only since 2006 has it been available without a prescription, following lobbying from the World Health Organization and American Medical Association. Currently the drug is only available without a prescription to women over the age of 18.

The lawsuit was filed in 2005 by the Center for Reproductive Rights. In the ruling, the judge blasted the FDA for giving in to “political considerations” and delaying approval of the new age limit.

Susan F. Wood, former director of women’s health at the FDA, resigned in 2005 in protest over the agency’s handling of the drug.

“What happened with Plan B demonstrated that the agency was off track, and was not being allowed to do its job properly,” she said.

The Family Research Council, a conservative organization, said the judge had given in to “political ideology promoting sexual license for teens.”

The FDA says it is reviewing the ruling, which it has thirty days to comply with.

Police report drug haul seizure worth up to £30 million in Brownhills, England

   Posted by: Admin    in Uncategorized

Monday, December 2, 2013

Police in the West Midlands in England today said nearly 200 kilograms worth of drugs with value possibly as great as £30 million (about US$49 million or €36 million) has been seized from a unit in the town of Brownhills. In what an officer described as “one of the largest [seizures] in the force’s 39 year history”, West Midlands Police reported recovering six big cellophane-wrapped cardboard boxes containing cannabis, cocaine, and MDMA (“ecstasy”) in a police raid operation on the Maybrook Industrial Estate in the town on Wednesday.

The impact this seizure will have on drug dealing in the region and the UK as a whole cannot be underestimated

The seized boxes, which had been loaded onto five freight pallets, contained 120 one-kilogram bags of cannabis, 50 one-kilogram bags of MDMA, and five one-kilogram bricks of cocaine. In a press release, West Midlands Police described what happened after officers found the drugs as they were being unloaded in the operation. “When officers opened the boxes they discovered a deep layer of protective foam chips beneath which the drugs were carefully layered”, the force said. “All the drugs were wrapped in thick plastic bags taped closed with the cannabis vacuum packed to prevent its distinctive pungent aroma from drawing unwanted attention.” Police moved the drugs via forklift truck to a flatbed lorry to remove them.

Detective Sergeant Carl Russell of West Midlands Police’s Force CID said the seizure was the largest he had ever made in the 24 years he has been in West Midlands Police and one of the biggest seizures the force has made since its formation in 1974. “The impact this seizure will have on drug dealing in the region and the UK as a whole cannot be underestimated”, he said. “The drugs had almost certainly been packed to order ready for shipping within Britain but possibly even further afield. Our operation will have a national effect and we are working closely with a range of law enforcement agencies to identify those involved in this crime at whatever level.”

Expert testing on the drugs is ongoing. Estimates described as “conservative” suggest the value of the drugs amounts to £10 million (about US$16.4 million or €12 million), although they could be worth as much as £30 million, subject to purity tests, police said.

Police arrested three men at the unit on suspicion of supplying a controlled drug. The men, a 50-year-old from Brownhills, a 51-year-old from the Norton area of Stoke-on-Trent in Staffordshire, and one aged 53 from Brownhills, have been released on bail as police investigations to “hunt those responsible” continue. West Midlands Police told Wikinews no person has yet been charged in connection with the seizure. Supplying a controlled drug is an imprisonable offence in England, although length of jail sentences vary according to the class and quantity of drugs and the significance of offenders’ roles in committing the crime.

Grand Canyon West Bus Tours From Vegas

   Posted by: Admin    in Timber

By Keith Kravitz

Not only are Grand Canyon West Rim bus tours from Las Vegas inexpensive and fun but they come with a host of fantastic upgrades like river rafting and the Grand Canyon Skywalk!

Let’s take a closer look at these West Rim bus tours:

West Rim

Basic bus tour to Grand Canyon West. Includes all park entrance fees. Explore the rim top via the free hop-on-hop-off shuttle bus. Must-see sights include Eagle Point, Guano Point, the Colorado River, and the fantastic Skywalk. Explore an authentic Hualapai Indian Village. Skywalk tickets are extra can be purchased on-site.

The Glass Bridge

This is the standard West Rim bus tour with Skywalk tickets. This is by far the best offer for those who want to walk the sky. The glass deck goes 70 feet beyond the lip of the rim and suspends you 4,000 feet above the Colorado River. The structure is an engineering marvel and can support up to 70 or more fully loaded jumbo jets. That said, maximum occupancy is 120 travelers.

Helicopter Ride to Bottom with Boat Tour

Transfer to an EcoStar 130 helicopter and descend 4,000 feet to the base. Deplane. Enjoy a Champagne toast under an authentic Indian Ramada. Ask your guide to show you the petroglyphs. Head upstream to pontoon boat for float ride down Colorado River.

These West Rim bus tours come with everything you need to enjoy the canyon including free pick up and drop off at your hotel, a lite breakfast, a delicious BBQ lunch, a Hoover Dam photo-stop, and a professional driver-guide. Be prepared to spend about a half day or more on most of these tours. From beginning to end, the helicopter-boat trip will take 12 hours. Prices start under $100 if purchased on the Web.

The West Rim is 120 miles east of Las Vegas. Tour buses can make the trip in under three hours. Only luxury motor coaches are used on these trips. They come with individualized A/C stations, ample legroom, immaculate bathrooms, large viewing windows, comfy seats, and a trip narration that’s been translated into 10 languages!

These trips always leave in the morning and depart 365 days a year including all major holidays. The route cuts through several Vegas suburbs before skirting Lake Mead and crossing the Hoover Dam bypass bridge. There will be a Hoover Dam photo stop on the Arizona side of the Dam. The final stretch takes you through a 700-year-old Joshua Tree forest before turning on a dirt road to Grand Canyon West. I personally think these “extra” sights really add to the value of these bus rides.

I strongly suggest you book your bus trip in advance. Two weeks is good, but earlier the better. This ensures you get a great seat on the day you want to take the tour. If you book the day before you go or on the same day, expect to pay a hefty premium.

Shop the Internet for the best deals on bus tours. Try tour operator websites first. From my experience, these guys feature the best prices, including one who offers up to 35% off retail. Make sure you pack your trip confirmation with you – you’ll need it to board the bus.

The Grand Canyon bus is one of the most affordable ways to see the West Rim. They’re also a heck of a lot of fun. These are all-inclusive trips. You don’t need to bring anything other than your sense of adventure. Loads of trip add-ons, too, like Skywalk tickets and river rafting. And, as always, book online. It’s cheaper!

Google launches Google Code project, showcasing open source code, APIs

   Posted by: Admin    in Uncategorized

Wednesday, March 23, 2005

On Thursday, March 17, Google announced the launch of code.google.com, a new website for its open-source software (also known as “code”) and APIs, for use by external developers. This launch is the first significant contribution Google has made to the open-source community. The release was announced at the end of the O’Reilly Emerging Technology Conference in San Diego.

Google’s announcement comes two weeks after Yahoo announced its own Developers Program, offering access to a new collection of its APIs, at the Search Engine Strategies 2005 Conference & Expo in New York. Chris DiBona, Google’s Open Source Program Manager, spoke about the release, emphasizing their desire to feature good programs that were being developed using their APIs. Two XML feeds are currently offered on the site, one for general updates to code hosted there, and another for changes to the weekly featured content.

The initial software projects provided on the Google site are narrowly focused, consisting of tools for debugging and compiling in two computer languages, C++ and Python, particularly when handling multi-threaded code. Google says this is in part to get feedback from a particular audience, before expanding the scope of the project.

These tools are all available under the BSD open-source license, though the site’s FAQ notes that it is not tied to any particular license, and in the future is likely to include code released under a variety of free licenses. Google has said that it is developing this site, in part, in the hopes that it can use some of the resulting code in the future.

A six-pound infant born in San Francisco, California has six perfectly formed and functional fingers and toes on his hands and feet, so that it isn’t considered a disability or deformity, say doctors at Saint Luke’s Hospital who were amazed by the oddity.

In a medical rarity, super baby Kamani Hubbard was born two weeks ago with 24 working digits. He is healthy and home with his parents in Daly City, California. Polydactyly, a congenital disorder is not uncommon in humans and animals, including cats, but to happen on both hands and feet is a rare hereditary condition.

“Nurses and doctors, looked so normal they couldn’t tell, they told me he was six pounds in good health, that was all they said,” said Miryoki Gross, Hubbard’s mother. Her baby’s specialness didn’t even show up on prenatal ultrasounds. “I heard nothing before I gave birth so I’m still in shock, kinda,” Gross added. Despite the mother’s shock, Kamani’s father, Kris, was the first to notice the condition.

Polydactyly (from Ancient Greek means ‘?????’ (polus) or “many” + ‘????????’ (daktulos) “finger[s]”), also known as polydactylism, sexdactyly, hexadactyly, or hexadactylism, is a congenital physical disorder consisting of supernumerary fingers or toes.

In Kamani’s case, however, all of the digits are perfectly formed and function or work normally. “I was in amazement, it took a little time for me to take it all in,” said Kris, a postal worker, who has a family history of polydactylism, but none of his relatives can remember it happening on both hands and feet.

Mostly, cases of polydactyly are surgically corrected. Kris himself had nubs of sixth digits, which were removed during his early childhood, for having been non-functional. “My son has six fingers then I saw toes, and I thought, this is quite unique. Some family members have had six fingers, not completely developed. But not the toes,” Kris noted.

“I would be tempted to leave those fingers in place. I realize children would tease each other over the slightest things, and having extra digits on each hand is more than slight. But imagine what sort of a pianist a 12-fingered person would be imagine what sort of a flamenco guitarist, if nothing else think of their typing skills,” Dr. Treece remarked.

“I just want him to see what greatness will be in store for him,” said Kris.

Fully developed and functional extra digits on both hands and feet are considered very rare as a genetic trait in medical history, amid some partial development of an extra digit occurs about twice in every 1,000 white male births. Ordinarily, polydactylism appears as an extra piece of non-functional tissue, typically occurring as an extra finger, sometimes with a bone, but no joint.

“It’s merely an interesting and beautiful variation rather than a worrisome thing,” said Dr. Michael Treece, a St. Luke’s Hospital pediatrician, and the OBGYN who delivered Kamani. He has postaxial polydactyly, which is 10 times more likely to occur in black children, and also more likely to appear in boys.

Goliath, a figure in Old Testament, was depicted as having had six fingers on each hand and six toes on each foot.

Blues guitarist Hound Dog Taylor, Get Carter, Little Tich, Toyotomi Hideyoshi and several other figures in history have had polydactyly. Sid Wilson, a turntablist of Slipknot, had been born with an extra finger and toe on his hands and feet which were removed shortly after his birth as doctors considered them to be dead.
